Q9. Will having the Diploma in Exercise and Health Fitness help me climb the ladder to management level any quicker?

Within the Irish fitness/ leisure industry is based as much on the individuals own initiative and opportunity as it is on qualifications. Gaining worthwhile employment is a crucial first step. The NCEF  hosts a jobs board  that is updated on a regular basis and should help you network with regards to finding suitable employment

 

Q10. What will I be qualified to do when I complete the Diploma Programme?

The Diploma in Exercise & Health Fitness provides a pathway for health & fitness professionals who wish to progress onwards from certificate to diploma level by accumulating credits in modules that further specialise them in specific areas within the industry (e.g. Personal Training, Health Related Activity for Children) and that also offer them an opportunity to become an Exercise & Health Fitness Tutor. Tutoring opportunities within the NCEF include tutoring on the CEHF and in the various specialist areas. It will broaden the options for you as a qualified H/ F professionals and offer you more opportunities to transfer and progress within the formal Irish and European education system while also working in the industry

 

Q11. Can I apply for a Degree Programme in University of Limerick once I have successfully completed the Diploma?

Further opportunities to progress from the NCEF Diploma in Exercise and Health Fitness (DEHF) to NFQ Level 8 in Exercise & Health Fitness and/or related areas at third Level in Ireland are currently being researched and developed by the NCEF.

The following options are currently under discussion and review by the relevant authorities in the University of Limerick and the NCEF :

Option 1: Entry into Sport & Exercise Science Undergraduate Degree Programme at UL.

Direct application /entry route for DEHF grads into Year 1 Sport & Exercise Science

Acceptance would possibly be based on a ) reaching a specific DEHF standard and b ) successful interview .

It is proposed that this option be first offered in academic year 11/12

Option 2: Top – up from Level 7 DEHF to Level 8 (new) Degree in Exercise & Health Fitness Management

 

Q12. Who is the governing body for Fitness Qualifications in Ireland?

At the moment there is no government statutory body established for the recognition of fitness instructor qualifications in Ireland. Qualifications are generally assessed by employers within the industry based on their record of employment and professionalism within the industry and the level of recognition of the accrediting body that awards the qualification. All NCEF awards are fully accredited by the University of Limerick, a nationally an internationally recognised and acclaimed educational institution. The NCEF has been involved for many years in all-party discussions regarding the establishment of a National Governing Authority in Exercise & Fitness.

 

Q13. I have recently completed the Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness and will be graduating in in August. I would like to apply for the Personal Training Specialist Module. Is it true that you need a years experience in the industry before applying for this module?

The NCEF does recommend that individuals, who have just completed the Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness or equivalent should try and seek employment in the industry for a year to gain further knowledge and experience, however this is not an entry requirement. Each applicant is treated individually and acceptance on to our programmes is based on the individual’s previous qualifications, employment and experiences.All applicants are required to submit a detailed CV with their application form. Some candidates may be referred to the NCEF/UL Recognition of Prior Learning Assessment Board (See Personal Training Entry Requirements). Should the application be successful, we can then recommend specific areas of study to review prior to the commencement of the course.
